Designer Hospital Gown

Okay, I can't be the only woman who hates the standard hospital gowns. You know the ones.... 20 sizes too big, blue and ugly? I've begun nesting and decided to make my own gown. Thanks to google I found a great free pattern for hospital gowns. Downloaded it and printed it then headed off to good 'ol Hobby Lobby to find some fabric. A print caught my eye pretty quickly so I scooped it up (on sale no less!) and came home to sew! About an hour later I had my own custom (and proper fitting) hospital gown! Now, I just hope CLRH doesn't burst my bubble by not letting me wear it. I made sure it even had snap shoulders for easy mmaneuvering around IV lines! And yes, that is a matching headband. By gosh, I may be a woman in labor, but I'm gonna look good at the same time!

  1. this is fabulous! can't believe you made it! mind sharing where you got the pattern? i'm in nursing school and from what i have seen, it depends on the hospital, but other than during a c-section, i don't see why they would have a problem with you wearing this. you'll definitely be the cutest mom on the floor, that's for sure!! congrats! :)

  6. You look so cute! How did you sew the snaps on? What is that white material? Thank you!!

  7. I used snap tape - it's available at most fabric stores! Hope that helps!

  8. This is so cute! The only thing I'd suggest is to put the opening and ties off-set to the side so you don't lay one the ties. That doesn't sound very comfortable. You looked very pretty though, good job!

  10. Thanks for the tip Dani, but you really don't feel the ties since it's just a couple of strips of velcro. The "ties" were just fake and made with thin ribbon.

Brokenheart - I am sorry to hear that you have a pacemaker at such a young age! Yes, I do think you need your own gowns! I tried to follow your link, but it was broken. I'd love to talk with you some more!

  11. I have been scouring the web for a beautiful hospital gown that doesn't cost an arm and leg, and I am so inspired by your beautiful gown that you created! I've been sewing burp cloths and drapes, but have never tackled a project like a nursing gown before. However, I love how yours turned out so much that I'm going to attempt to make my own! Thank you for the inspiration!

  13. This is such a cute gown! I am 18 weeks along with #1 and have been thinking about buying a hospital gown... they are expensive though! So I thought I could probably make one... but I am not a great seamstress... was it tough? Is the pattern easy to follow? What do you think of snaps in the back instead of velcro?

    Thank you, Teresa :)

  15. I have found that pattern online, I know this is a super old post but was wondering if you could tell me what you did to alter the pattern for maternity?

  16. kdalomia - I apologize for just getting back, but I haven't logged into this blog in a very long time! I didn't make any alterations to make it fit maternity. But I was very tiny and had a tiny belly.
